Flash is Dead – Keep Your Ads Alive With HTML5

As we explained in our previous post, Google is no longer accepting Flash ads as of June 30th, and they’re not going to run them at all from the start of 2017. Now is the time to move everything you have over to HTML5, which sounds like it would be a huge task, but it doesn’t have to be.

If you’re happy with the way your Flash banner ads look, that’s a great start. To redesign and replicate everything manually in HTML5 would take a long time, with a lot of coding, copying, and pasting. Thankfully, though, there are solutions out there made specifically to make your life easier.

With BannerFlow, none of your previous hard work has to go to waste. If you want your ads to look exactly the same as they did previously, all you need to do is upload the images and various assets into the BannerFlow platform, and drag them into place on the canvas. All Google fonts are available to use too, so you can replicate the style perfectly, all without having to do a single bit of coding. If you had a fully animated banner, that can easily be replicated too. You can make this take up the entire banner, or just a section of it, depending on the style you’re going for.

The best thing about this is that your video doesn’t contribute any ‘weight’ to the banner, so the actual size of the tag remains small. When the banner is displayed, the video is pulled from the site where it has been uploaded. All you need to do is insert the URL into the YouTube or Vimeo widget when you’re designing your banner.

Speaking of banner weight, HTML5 banners are typically heavier than their Flash counterparts, so they take up more memory and can take longer to load. This isn’t ideal, as it can slow loading of web pages. However, with BannerFlow it’s all optimised automatically, which means the banner tag is small enough but there’s no compromise on the quality.

The beauty of having all your banner ads in HTML5 is that they’re all fully responsive, so will automatically adapt to the screen size they’re shown on. All you need to decide is where to place your new, updated ads, and the options are endless as all ad networks have made the move to HTML5.
